Presentation of the Christ Child
I spent many hours in the Pantheon during my Rome fellowship. I returned here as often as I could to experience the 'perfect sphere' it presented, a physical manifestation of a spiritual symbol, a true geometric reconciling of Heaven and Earth. I began this sketch while there, and decided to appropriate the scene as the 'presentation of the Christ child at the temple', with figures of Mary and Joseph in the foreground with Simeon. Although playful and imaginary, it expresses much that I have come to feel about the nature of sacred places, Jew or Gentile, Christian or Shinto. Please contact me for inquiries.
